Why All-Purpose Potting Mix Isn’t Sufficient

All-purpose potting soil certainly made gardening easier when it was developed in the 1960s. However, it falls short for many houseplants, particularly African violets. Understanding their unique needs can make all the difference.

The Nature of Epiphytic Plants

African violets, like many other houseplants, are tropical epiphytes. They thrive on trees or rocks, growing in organic matter rather than traditional soil. Their roots are designed to take in water and nutrients from the air and surrounding organic debris, not from compacted soil.

When planted in an all-purpose potting mix, the heaviness compresses their roots, hindering water, nutrient, and air flow. Additionally, this mix retains too much moisture, leading to root rot, which African violets are particularly sensitive to.

What Do African Violets Need?

African violets thrive in a lightweight potting mix that drains quickly but retains some moisture. The ideal pH should be slightly acidic, ranging from 5.5 to 6.2. Below are the components of my effective African violet potting mix.

Ingredients for Your Potting Mix

Perlite: This lightweight volcanic glass holds water and nutrients while creating air pockets.
Vermiculite: Similar to perlite, this material helps with aeration and moisture retention.
Coconut Coir: Made from ground coconut husks, it’s a sustainable alternative to peat moss, offering less acidity.
Fir Bark: Common in epiphyte mixes, fir bark slowly releases moisture and provides roots with something to cling to.
Worm Castings: A great addition for soil structure and slow-release nutrients.

A bucket for pre-wetting the coconut coir
A 1-cup measuring cup
Gloves to keep your hands clean
A container for mixing and storing the mix
A facemask or handkerchief (to manage the dust from perlite)
Warm water
Liquid dish detergent

Step-by-Step: Mixing Your African Violet Potting Mix

Pre-wetting the Coconut Coir

This step can get messy. Use warm water (not exceeding 100°F) to speed up the process, which typically takes about 10-15 minutes. Place your coconut coir brick in a bucket and mix in a few drops of detergent. Slowly pour approximately four quarts of water over the brick; the detergent helps it absorb moisture. Allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes.

Creating the Mix

In your storage container, combine the following ingredients:

4 cups of coconut coir
5 cups of perlite
3 cups of fir bark
1 cup of vermiculite
1 cup of worm castings

Mix well and cover with a lid to retain moisture. This ratio can be easily scaled for larger batches.

Caring for Your African Violets
